Rustam and Zohrab

''"Rustam and Zohrab"'' (in Azeri ''Rüstәm vә Söһrab'') is the third mugham opera by Uzeyir Hajibeyov. It was written according to motifs of "Shahnameh" poem by Ferdowsi, in 1910. Poems written in Arabic prosody take a great place in the opera.
It was noted, that there were a lot of versions of a libretto because of authorship. In the result of M.Aslanov’s investigations, Uzeyir Hajibeyov’s authorship, and also belonging of some poems to poet and gazel writer Azer Buzovnali was proved. In this opera Hajibeyov shortened mugham scene. The composer devoted much attention to author’s music.
Premiere of the opera was held on November 12, 1910 in Baku, in H.Z.Taghiyev theatre. Huseyngulu Sarabski was stage director and Uzeyir Hajibeyov was conductor of the opera. Huseyngulu Sarabski (Zohrab), Ahmed Agdamski (Tahmina), M.H.Teregulov (Keykavus) and others played the leading parts. But the opera couldn’t achieve the great success and that is why U.Hajibeyov got it off the stage.
After some revisions the opera was again staged in March, 1915, in theatre of H.Z.Tagihiyev, at a benefit performance of Muslim Magomayev. But again it suffered a failure and got off the stage.
